Royals use third-round surge to take first win

Tied at 6-6 after two rounds, the San Marcos boys tennis team took control and won some decisive sets in the third to pick up its first win of the year, 10-8, over visiting Nordhoff Tuesday.

Scott Messier and Jackson Mann went 3-0 as a doubles team, and coach Jarrod Bradley said that a 6-0 set win by Stephen Amspoker and Jackson Foster in the final round was also key.

“We put our nerves down in that third round and hit like we do in practice. That was really good for us,” said Bradley.

The Royals’ four set wins in the third round all came via 6-0 sweeps.

Both Sean-Michael Gaudefroy and Travis Enholm went 2-1 in singles play for the Royals, who host Santa Ynez Wednesday.
