Royal hitters show no mercy on Yellowjackets

The San Marcos boys volleyball team put together a solid offensive showing in its home opener on Tuesday, sweeping Oxnard 25-17, 25-14, 25-14.

Andrew Grimes led the Royals with 16 kills. Jon Newton also reached double-figures by hammering home 10 more. Including Erik Holliday, the trio recorded 32 kills on the night at an impressive hitting clip of .615.

“We’ve got a lot of power and we’ve got a lot of offense this year,” said San Marcos head coach Roger Kuntz, citing team chemistry as a strength as well.

Kuntz also credited Neil Greene with a steady serving and receiving match. San Marcos plays again in the Thunderhut on Thursday against visiting Buchanan.
