Plenty of hitting not enough for Vaqueros

Eighteen hits would normally be enough to sweep a softball doubleheader but that wasn’t the case for SBCC, which dropped a pair of games on Friday on the first day of the Golden West Tournament in Huntington Beach. Orange Coast beat the Vaqueros 12-2 and L.A. Harbor posted a 7-5 victory.

The Vaqueros (1-12) have dropped their last nine games.

“Physically, we were pretty evenly matched,” said coach Paula Congleton. “But we’re making way too many mental errors. We’re not paying attention and we’re not being aggressive on defense or at the plate.”

Orange Coast, which had 16 hits, broke open a 1-1 game with seven runs in the fifth inning. Erin Breck led the Vaqueros by going 2-for-4 with an RBI double. Sara Gurchinoff was 1-1 with two walks and two runs.

SBCC had 11 hits in the second game, led by Breck, Kellee Venturi and Gurchinoff with two apiece. Breck had a two-run single in the seventh. The Vaqueros hurt their cause with three errors in each game.

Santa Barbara will take on College of the Desert at 10 a.m. today, followed by a game against an opponent to be determined.
