Mason makes it happen in circle, at the plate

San Marcos’ Emily Mason refused to surrender a single extra-base hit for the second game in a row Wednesday, leading her team to 12-5 softball victory over Channel Islands. The Royals managed two runs in both the first and second innings, with Mason keeping the Raiders off the scoreboard.

“She pitched really well for us. She’s definitely starting out the season strong,” commented San Marcos coach Alex Sheldon about Mason, who was also responsible for one of the two doubles hit by the Royals.

San Marcos really heated up in the third when Tara Crawford started putting pressure on Channel Islands with a leadoff solo home run. The Royals then loaded the bases, setting up senior Katelynn Kaufman up for a bases-clearing double to give the team a substantial eight-run lead.

“When Kaufmann drove in those runs, it really got the game started,” said Sheldon.

After a seven-run third inning for San Marcos, the Raiders swapped pitcher Hillary Forestelle with catcher Marisa Meza, who did a good job holding the Royals to only one more final run in the seventh.

Channel Islands redeemed itself with five runs in the fifth but with four errors overall, the team fell short and proved no match for San Marcos.

Also contributing to the Royals victory was Kelly Martyniuk, who made it on base for all five at-bats, receiving five walks, scoring three runs, and stealing two bases.

Cady Haskell did some damage as well, with two hits, two RBIs, and three runs.

The win gives San Marcos a record of 1-1 and the team intends on continuing to play some error-free softball at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at Fillmore.
