Late rally pays off in tenth for Vaqs

SBCC scratched and clawed its way out of a 5-2 hole in the bottom of the eighth on Thursday and went on to beat visiting Moorpark 6-5 on Brad Marasco’s bases-loaded walk in the 10th.

It was the third straight baseball win for the Vaqueros (15-14, 4-9),  who were down to their final out in the ninth with nobody on. Rorry Nakayama walked, pinch-hitter Chris LoPiccolo was hit by a pitch and Chavez delivered a single to right on a 2-2 pitch that tied it at 5.

In the 10th, Corey Krupp reached on an infield single, was bunted to second and went to third when Moorpark’s Harrison Kane intentionally walked two straight batters to set up a bases-loaded situation with one out. After a flyout to right, Marasco came off the bench and drew a walk-off walk on a 3-1 count.

“I told Brad to go up there and win the game and he did just that,” said coach Teddy Warrecker. “He doesn’t chase a ball out of the zone and has a quality at-bat after sitting for almost 10 innings. He was very calm.”

Three Santa Barbara pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts against the Raiders (9-15, 5-8).

“Zack Edgington and Greg Pellici combined for 5 2/3 innings of one-run relief with 10 strikeouts,” said Warrecker. “Right there at the end (when the Raiders had a runner on third with two outs in the 10th), I went out and talked to Greg about (Josh) Gray, their hitter. He had a plan in mind and he executed his plan to perfection.”

Edgington fanned five and allowed one run on three hits in four innings. Pellici, a hard-throwing left-hander, came on with runners on first and third and one out in the eighth. He allowed a sacrifice fly that made it 5-2 and got the final out on a fly to right.

Pellici walked the leadoff batter in the 10th and the runner reached third on a bunt and a stolen base. Pellici struck out the final two batters, including Gray on a high fastball.

Barrett Ceverha, who had two hits, staked the Vaqueros to a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first. Cliff Quick, Moorpark’s starting pitcher, gave the visitors a 3-1 lead with a two-run homer in the third.

SBCC plays its next two on the road — on Saturday at Moorpark and Tuesday at Ventura.
