Hawke leads Vaqueros to clean 9-0 sweep

Heather Hawke didn’t lose a game in singles or doubles Tuesday, leading SBCC to a 9-0 WSC women’s tennis victory over Hancock at Pershing Park.

Hawke, who moved from No. 2 to No. 1 singles, blanked Maty Martinez 6-0, 6-0 and combined with Meghan Schaefer to win the No. 1 doubles, 8-0. Jade Lewis-Thomas became eligible just in the nick of time, winning the No. 6 singles and No. 2 doubles with Carla Dauden as the Vaqueros improved to 2-4 overall and 2-3 in conference.

“We’re still limping along,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “We lost our No. 4 player due to illness. Luckily, Jade became eligible today.”

Kathy Startzman and Alex Prince improved to 4-0 in doubles while Startzman got her first singles win with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at No. 4.

SBCC will complete the first round of WSC play on Tuesday at Cuesta.
