Harvard edges Gaucho netters in close 4-3 match

UCSB and Harvard split six singles matches, but the Crimson won the doubles point and ended the Gauchos two-match winning streak with a 4-3 decision on Monday.

Natalia Lozano, Asagi Onaga, and Bryanna Ojeda won at the Nos. 4, 5, and 6 spots respectively. Onaga swept her match against Caroline Davis, 7-5, 6-0, while Lozano won 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (7), and Ojeda won 6-1, 0-7, 1-0 (7).

Harvard took two out of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. UCSB’s doubles win came at No. 1 with Michelle Murphy and Sofia Novak recording an 8-5 decision over Beier Ko and Agnes Sibilski.

Two of the Crimson’s singles wins came in three sets. At No. 1, Laura Peterzan came back after losing the first set to defeat Michelle Murphy by a 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 count. At No. 3, Sibilski also needed a comeback for the victory, defeating Novak 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.

The Gauchos are now 11-5 overall and will remain at home to host Santa Clara on Saturday, Mar. 28 at 11:00 a.m. on the Robertson Gymnasium courts.

Including the women’s tennis match against Santa Clara, three UCSB intercollegiate events, scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 28, have been designated “Pink Week” games. In addition to tennis, a softball doubleheader scheduled to start at 12 p.m. on Campus Diamond, and a 12 p.m. women’s water polo match at Campus Pool will also be part of the effort.

“Pink Week” is part UCSB Athletics’ BE Great initiative.
