Fretz twins have a birthday bash in Royals’ win

Twin outfielders Leanne and Jenise Fretz celebrated their 17th birthday by going a combined 4-for-7 with four RBIs to lift the San Marcos softball team to a 16-2 drubbing of visiting Santa Paula Wednesday.

“I thought we did a good job at the plate today. They hit four of our batters and we drew four walks and we were just under control,” said coach Alex Sheldon.

Leanne Fretz had the game’s only extra-base hit with a triple, while Kelly Martyniuk went 3-for-3 and also walked once in the leadoff spot. Senior pitcher Emily Mason settled down after the Cardinals’ two-run first and retired 12 consecutive batters at one point.

The Royals (2-5) will have to channel some of the momentum from the victory into Friday’s crosstown showdown at Dos Pueblos.

“Anytime you go into these crosstown games, in any sport, I think it’s really a toss-up. The team that shows up and makes the big plays is going to come out on top,” said Sheldon, who also pointed out that his team includes many seasoned players like Mason, who has already played nine varsity games against DP in her career.
