Dons miss out on last chance, lose 7-6

The Santa Barbara baseball team had plenty of fight on Tuesday, rallying three times against San Luis Obispo, but didn’t get a chance to get a final swing in a 7-6 loss to the Tigers.

Jack Crummer tied the score in the top of the seventh inning after a base hit and two stolen bases moved him over to third. Crummer scampered home when the catcher’s throw to third got away.

But San Luis Obispo’s leadoff batter walked in the bottom half of the inning and bunted to second. Matt Ward’s single brought in the winning run for the Tigers (3-0).

“It was a question of who was up last,” Dons bench coach Mike Cooney said, praising the performance from pitcher Collin Dewell even though he took the loss.

Dewell came on in the fourth inning with Santa Barbara in a 5-4 hole and two runners on base. He proceeded to strike out the Tigers’ 3-4-5 hitters in succession to end the threat.

Crummer led the Dons (1-2) at the plate, going 4-for-4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.

All of Santa Barbara’s games this season have been part of the round-robin Central Coast Tournament, which ends on Thursday with a home game against Pioneer Valley.
