Cuesta’s Salazar nearly untouchable vs. Vaqs

Stacie Salazar tossed a one-hitter with eight strikeouts on Tuesday as Cuesta blanked SBCC 4-0 in a WSC softball game at Pershing Park.

Salazar fanned seven of the first eight batters and only allowed three baserunners. Sierra Van Olphen’s single up the middle in the fourth was the only hit for the Vaqueros (6-16, 4-8).

“We had a good practice on Monday and I think we were ready mentally,” said coach Paula Congleton. “She had a good riseball and we didn’t make adjustments until I told them they were going to get pulled out of the game if they didn’t slap or drag the ball. We weren’t making any contact.

“Then we started to see the ball and drive through but we still were not very successful with our follow-through. We won’t win any games with one hit.”

The Vaqueros travel to Ventura on Thursday and then open a five-game homestand in their own Bash at the Beach tournament. They’ll play two on Saturday against Santa Ana (noon) and Saddleback (4 p.m.).
