Chargers strong-arm Newbury Park in opener

The Dos Pueblos boys volleyball team kicked off its season on Wednesday night, sweeping Newbury Park 25-19, 25-18, 25-16 in Thousand Oaks.

“It was nice to get one under our belts, get the nervousness out,” said DP head coach Chris Hughes, coming off a 2007-08 season in which the Chargers placed second in the Channel League and made it the CIF quarterfinals.

Cody Zoesch had a team-high six kills while Will McCracken added five with three aces. Dillan Bennett pitched in three kills and two digs.

“Everybody played and everybody played well,” summed up Hughes, pleased with how his team’s first match played out.

DP has its home opener on Friday night in Sovine gym against Buchanan of Fresno.
