Bishop’s gloves missing in 12-2 setback

The Bishop Diego baseball team struggled defensively on Wednesday, committing four errors in a 12-2 downer at Ventura.

The Cardinals coughed up five unearned runs in the first three innings while staking the Cougars to a 9-0 lead.

“Our defense was atrocious today,” admitted head coach Brian Moulton, feeling sorry for his starting pitcher Paul Gherini.

Bishop’s bats weren’t any more effective, managing four hits and two runs on the day. Ryan Landeros scored the Cardinals’ first run after singling to start the fourth inning. He scored from third base on Joe Salda’s double.

Trent Speier scored Bishop’s second and final run in the top of the seventh, scoring on an error.

The loss drops the Cardinals to 2-3 this spring. Bishop opens up league next week with Oaks Christian but first faces Nordhoff in a Saturday doubleheader.
