Warriors can’t break through in GSAC

Nineteenth ranked Westmont women’s tennis traveled to Fullerton on Wednesday to make up for a rainout on Tuesday against Hope International (3-1, 1-1 GSAC). The postponement did not seem to help the Warriors who fell to the Royals by a score of 5-4 in the Golden State Athletic Conference match.

Westmont (1-2, 0-2 GSAC) led 2-1 after doubles play but could not turn their advantage into a victory.  Seniors Kristen Lee and Christina Klein earned an 8-4 victory at number two doubles over Hope’s Minette Steyn and Kristine Brock. On the number three court Sarah Kamida and Sarah Louie picked up an 8-3 victory over Brittney Munoz and Kelly Galligan.

The Royal’s doubles point came on the number one court where Bettina Radke and Lotta Jurlander defeated Ilissa Mathews and Cassie Strange 8-1.

Westmont’s two victories in singles came on courts two and three. At number two, Strange defeated Steyn 6-1, 6-2 and at number three, Lee triumphed over Alexandra Weiss 6-1, 6-1.

But Hope International picked up the four singles matches needed to claim the team victory. At number one, Radke defeated Mathews 6-3, 6-0. Jurlander claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win over Klein on court four while Munoz defeated Louie 6-2, 6-4 on court six.  The longest match of the day was on court five. After defeating Brock 6-3 in the first set, Kamida fell 6-4, 6-2 in sets two and three and Brock.

The Warriors return to action on Saturday when they host #10 California Baptist at the Abbott Tennis Courts on the Westmont campus.
