Siporin, Perez put Vaqueros in 3rd after Round 1

Freshman Matt Siporin fired an even-par 72 on Monday and former Santa Barbara High standout Andrew Perez shot 73, leading the SBCC men’s golf team to third place in the opening round of the Bakersfield Invitational at Seven Oaks CC.

Canyons and Fresno share the lead at 5-over 365 in the 36-hole, 13-school event that concludes today at Rio Bravo CC. Jim Weltig of Canyons was the medalist with a 5-under 67.

The Vaqueros are 11 shots back at 376 as all six players shot between 72 and 79 in the season opener. Steve Wilson, a sophomore from Santa Ynez, turned in a 76, followed by Thomas Richards (77), Dustin Schweitzer (78) and Albert Corral (79), a freshman from San Marcos High.

“It was real nice conditions,” said 10th-year SBCC coach Chuck Melendez. “We struggled a little with our putting. I think we’re capable of lower scores.

“This is the most depth (11 players) I’ve had and we have a lot of talent. We’ll see if its the most talent I’ve had.”
