Seniors come through in easy DP win

The final result of Dos Pueblos’ wrestling match against Buena Tuesday wasn’t in question for very long, but a little bit of Senior Night nostalgia and some good individual matchups made the 63-15 decision over the Bulldogs interesting nonetheless.

“It definitely feels pretty good to pick up a win because this is my last time wrestling in this gym,” said senior Lucas Lorio, who picked up a pin in his 145-pound bout.

Fellow seniors Anthony Sarena, Weston Soto, Connor Dorais and Joseph Story also won their matches via pin, while Nick Wagner was pinned in the heavyweight division by a top-tier opponent in Julian Ferguson. Senior Kevin Little was also in on the night’s festivities, as each senior presented his mom with flowers and a hug before the match.

“It was the last time I’ll wrestle under the light, so I felt I just needed to get out there and win it for the team. I’ve learned so much from wrestling over the past four years,” said Soto, who picked up a pair of nice reversals before collecting the pin with 53 ticks left in the second round.

The No. 5 Chargers must now focus on Saturday’s Channel League Championships at Buena, which will serve as a CIF qualifier.

“I’m proud of my seniors this year. They’re just a fun group to work with, and this year they’ve really re-vitalized me,” said coach Anthony Califano, who is in his 10th year with the team.
