Numerous Charger, Royal wrestlers advance

Dos Pueblos’ Connor Dorais will get a rematch with Ventura’s Isaac Archibeque Saturday in the semifinals of the 160-pound class at the CIF Individual Wrestling Champonships in Oxnard.

Dorais faced Archibeque two weeks ago in the Channel-League title match and ended up in the hospital with a concussion. Archibeque was declared the winner at first but the title was later awarded to Dorais based on an appeal of a missed call by the official, who did not view the take-down that injured Dorais as illegal.

“I never felt it was intentional. These are two good kids who just match up well together,” said Chargers coach Anthony Califano.

DP’s Nick Wagner is in Saturday’s heavyweight semifinal and San Marcos’ Zach Belway is in the 171-pound semis.

Other Royals moving on in the consolation bracket are Felipe Roman (119), Tyler Mallard (135), Jake Jourdan (215) and heavyweight Luis Urbina. Coach Tony Becerra said that Roman and Jourdan turned in solid performances Friday.

Shannon Dixon (112), Chuy Lopez (125), Lucas Iorio (140), Abraham Lizama (171) and Raul Yescas (215) also advanced to Saturday’s consolation competition. Lizama, a sophomore, was originally Dorais’ backup at 160 pounds this season, but moved up and finished third in the Channel League.

The top five wrestlers in each weight division move on to next weekend’s CIF Masters meet Temecula, from which the top eight advance to the State Championships.
