Gauchos rough up Tennessee Tech, 10-1

CATHEDRAL CITY – All nine Gaucho starters had at least one hit on Friday night as UCSB posted a 10-1 win over Tennessee Tech on the second day of the Cathedral City Classic at the Big League Dreams Sports Park. The nine runs mark the largest margin of victory for UCSB so far this season.

With the win, UCSB improves to 7-5 on the season and 2-1 during this week’s tournament. Tennessee Tech falls to 5-7 overall.

Seniors Christine Ramos and Tiffany Wright led the team offensively. Ramos went 2-for-5 at the plate with a run and two RBI. Wright went 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI. JuniorKelsey Anderson rounded out the multiple hit performances going 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk.

Box Score

In the circle, Lindsey Correa (1-0) picked up the win after pitching a complete game and allowing one run on two hits. She struck out nine and retired the first 10 batters she faced.

A two-RBI single from Wright with no outs at the top of the first inning got the Gauchos on the scoreboard first. A RBI single from Jackie Conlin later in the inning brought Amanda Ziegler home and stretched the UCSB lead to 3-0.

At the top of the sixth, Ramos hit a RBI single to the shortstop driving Anderson home to stretch the Gaucho advantage to 4-0. The following inning, UCSB loaded the bases with one out before a pitch hit Conlin, sending Wright across home plate. The Gauchos brought home five more runs during the seventh before Tennessee Tech was able to shut down the UCSB scoring frenzy.

Lacie Coquerille hit a home run at the top of the order for the Golden Eagles at the bottom of the seventh, but it would be the only run for Tennessee Tech as UCSB took the 10-1 win.

Coquerille had both of the Golden Eagles’ hits on Friday evening. Holly Thomas took the loss after tossing a complete game and allowing 10 runs – eight earned – on 12 hits. She walked six and struck out four.

The Gauchos’ continue action at the 2009 Cathedral City Classic on Saturday when they face Kansas at 5:30 p.m.

UCSB will open its 2009 home schedule on March 11 when they host San Diego in a doubleheader.
