Warriors move into second place in GSAC with win

Four Warriors scored fourteen or more points as #15 Westmont women’s basketball picked up a Golden State Athletic Conference road win over #23 The Master’s (8-6, 3-2) on Saturday night. The Warriors outscored the Mustangs 44-28 in the second half to record a 75-61 victory. With the win, Westmont claims sole possession of second place in the GSAC with a 4-1 record; 12-1 overall.

Guards Katie Kittle and Amber Stevens each scored 16 points while guard Jessica Case and forward Alisha Heglund each scored 14. Kittle made four of five from beyond the arc while Stevens connected on seven of 11 from the floor.

The first half remained close throughout with neither team holding more than a six point lead. The Mustang’s Erica Inge (8 points) scored at the buzzer to give The Master’s a 33-31 advantage at the break.

“We were down by two at half but had a great defensive second half,” said Westmont head coach Kirsten Moore. “We met all our defensive goals; out-rebounding them and holding them under to 30 points.  I’m really proud of my team.”

Down 43-40 with 14:32 to play in the game, the Warriors went on an 12-2 run fueled by three long-range baskets by Kittle.  After a layup by Inge, Heglund added three more layups to put the Warriors on top 58-47 with 8:33 remaining on the clock.  The Mustang’s did not get closer than eight points the rest of the way.

The Mustangs were led by All-GSAC junior guard Annie Gillespie who scored 21 points and pulled down seven points.

The win was the second this week over top-25 ranked teams. Westmont defeated #17 California Baptist by a score of 73-56 on Tuesday.

Westmont will hit the road again next Tuesday to take on Biola (10-3, 3-2 GSAC) in La Mirada. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
