Urbina makes heavyweight finals, Dorais takes third

Luis Urbina made quite a splash at this weekend’s Nogales Super Championship wrestling tournament, which isn’t hard to do when you tip the scales at 285 pounds.

The first-year San Marcos wrestler made it all the way to the finals in the heavyweight division via four pins before losing by fall in the championship match.

He weighed around 319 after football season, but has shed the pounds to make weight on the mat.

“He’s paid his dues and it’s really starting to come together. His transition over the past two weeks has been amazing,” said coach Tony Becerra.

Zach Belway lost his first match of the year, dropping a controversial decision in the 171-pound bracket and winding up in fifth place.

Dos Pueblos’ Connor Dorais placed in the 160-pound division, finishing third. He went in seeded third, but had to beat the top seed along the way.

“”He lost to the kid who ended up winning the tournament, and it was only his second loss of the year so he was pretty down after the loss,” said coach Anthony Califano. “But he bucked up and fought through the consolation bracket. He beat two kids that were CIF medalists last year.”

Both Dorais and Belway have aspirations to place at the CIF Maters meet and advance to the state championships this year.

San Marcos had consolation finishes by Tyler Mallard, Julian Lake and Louis Giroux.
