Mendoza’s 16 can’t save Royals from Bulldogs

Jeannette Mendoza scored 16 points while Kelley Chilton and Kalley Ridgway each added 10, but the San Marcos girls basketball team struggled defensively against mighty Buena in Thursday’s 71-46 road loss.

“We didn’t protect the key and we didn’t stop the cutters,” said coach Kristyn Miller. “We do that in practice and the coaches go home with bruises, but we need to be able to do that in a game.”

The Bulldogs led 38-23 at the half and did not lose a quarter in the game.

“Offensively we had a pretty good showing, but we needed more defensive focus,” said Miller.

The Royals play a tough, physical Pacifica team on Saturday.
