Fitzgerald’s dominant second quarter lifts Royals

Jade Fitzgerald decided that the San Marcos girls water polo team was going to beat visiting Buena Tuesday, so she simply took over in the second quarter.

“I’ve never seen a kid at our school play so intense for a quarter,” said coach Brian Roth.

Fitzgerald scored three goals, three steals and an assist in the period as the Royals picked up a 15-8 victory, their first in the Channel League.

The Royals (7-7, 1-2) took a 10-5 lead into halftime and lifted it to 14-6 after three. Flo Chardon chipped in four goals for San Marcos. Roth’s team will need to either keep its .500 record or take at least third in the Channel League to make the postseason.

Next up is DP at home on Tuesday.

“Our goal is to play them tougher than last time,” he said.
