Dons drop a pair, Chargers make semis

Dos Pueblos’ girls water polo team will try to avenge its season-opening loss to Corona del Mar as it hosts the Sea Kings at 11 a.m. in the semifinals of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.

Alex Hill and Amanda Redfern scored three goals apiece as the Chargers (13-2) downed Carlsbad 12-6 in the tournament opener. Later in the day, Sami Hill had 11 saves in the cage and Tiera Schroder scored the game-winner with 1:30 remaining in a 5-4 victory over Foothill.

Santa Barbara lost its opener 11-5 to power-packed Laguna Beach despite trailing by only two goals heading into the fourth quarter. Leah Gonzales had two goals and two assists in the game, and Charlotte Hendrix added a goal and an assist.

Next up for the Dons was Vista, a defending CIF champ from the San Diego Section. Santa Barbara was up 5-3 with five minutes remaining but gave up three unanswered and lost 6-5. Gonzales had a goal and two assists in the game and Makenzy Fowler had a pair of scores as well.

“They made some big shots and we just couldnt put ours away down the stretch,” said coach Mark Walsh. “At this point I wouldn’t say it’s because we’re young.”

Santa Barbara (5-10) hosts Long Beach Wilson Saturday at 10 a.m.
