Cal Lutheran tops Warrior netters

Westmont men’s tennis suffered a 6-3 loss at California Lutheran (1-0) on Saturday morning bringing their season record to 1-1. After winning his doubles match with partner Bryan Cox, Westmont’s Mattias Neuman was forced to withdraw from the number one singles match due to illness.  Neuman and Cox defeated the Kingsmen’s Paul Wetterholm and Forrest Hunt by a score of 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. 

However, California Lutheran picked up wins at number two and three doubles. At number two, Ryan Lassila and John Karsant were down 6-3 to Westmont’s Aaron Cooke and Diego Almeida before bounding back and forcing the match into a tiebreaker. The CLU duo prevailed 14-12 in the tiebreaker format.

Westmont’s number three doubles team of Ryley Schultz and Kent Stormans were defeated by Andrew Giuffrida and Jorda Culppepper 8-3.

Nueman retired in the first set of his singles match against Guiffrida with the score 6-5. Almeida took on Wetterholm on the number two court, winning in three sets 6-0, 3-6, 6-1.  Cox also won in three sets on the number three court, defeating Hunt 6-1, 5-7, (13-11).

Despite winning the first set at numbers four and six, The Warriors did not pick up a point in the bottom tier of the singles matches. At number four, Cooke lost to Lassial 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 while at number six, Schultz fell to Culpepper 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. At number five, Stormans suffered a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Karsant.

The Warriors return to action on Saturday, February 7 when they host Point Loma Nazarene at Abbott Tennis Courts in the first Golden State Athletic Conference match of the year.  The match is scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start.
