Warriors slip by Cate in Carp showdown

Caitlin Wallace and Amanda Burch combined for 25 points as Carpinteria’s girls basketball team won a hard-fought 35-28 decision over Cate in Wednesday’s Battle of Carpinteria.

“Cate played tough,” said Warriors coach Dan Mercer. “We had an 8-point lead with four minutes to go and it was an even game after that. We didn;t take care of the ball well at the end of the game.”

The Warriors forced 28 turnovers with their press, but had a forgettable day at the free-throw line making just seven of their 26 attempts.

“We’re a 53-percent team normally, so it’s back to the practice court on that,” said Mercer. “It was just a hard-fought game that played like a rivalry. I was impressed by the scrappiness of both teams.”
