Undermanned Dons lose out on title

The Santa Barbara boys basketball team went to battle in the championship game of the Moorpark Tournament on Saturday and, as has been the case for much of the season, didn’t have some of its top weapons in a 64-47 loss to Granada Hills.

Bigs Chris Pratt and Taylor Fauntleroy were elsewhere for volleyball commitments and assistant coach John Slavin said Granada used their size to an advantage all night long.

“Without an inside presence we just got killed,” said Slavin

John Uribe notched a career-high 20 points thanks to six 3-pointers and Roberto Nelson scored 15.

Nelson scored all of Santa Barbara’s 10 points in the first quarter before getting double and triple-teamed nearly every time he touched the ball.

The Dons were still in contention at half, down 32-26. But a 17-1 Granada Hills run to start the second half doomed Santa Barbara.

The Dons, who have only been at full strength for their two wins, are now 5-2 while Granada Hills improves to 4-0.

Santa Barbara plays in the Pacifica Tournament next week.
