Royals burned after strong first quarter

Whatever was working for the San Marcos boys basketball team early on against Santa Fe Christian on Friday quickly stopped working in a 53-38 setback in the Coast Union Tournament.

After jumping out to a 14-4 lead, the Royals were outscored 7-0 to finish the first quarter and only scored 13 more points in the second and third quarters combined.

“We didn’t deal with their pressure well,” explained Royals head coach Jarrod Bradley, whose team plays in the third-place game Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

San Marcos’ Nick Marquez led all scorers with 23 points — 11 of those coming in the first quarter. Bradley highlighted JP Dodson’s play in the fourth quarter when he scored all of his 6 points.

The Royals fall to 2-4 overall while Santa Fe improves to 3-0.
