Pinole Valley avenges DP upset

Pinole Valley’s girls basketball team was ranked 15th in the nation last season when Dos Pueblos pulled a gigantic 55-52 upset over the Spartans at the Bryan Ayer Classic.

Apparently, the memory stuck.

Junior DeNesha Stallworth, already committed to play for the Cal Bears, scored 34 points and grabbed 21 rebounds Friday as Pinole Valley avenged last year’s loss in a 72-48 win over the Chargers.

“They came back with a chip on their shoulder, and they were definitely intimidating our younger players,” said DP head coach Maynard Pilapil.

The Chargers, however, hung tough early on, as the Spartan lead was only 19-14 after the first quarter. Meghan Murphy poured in 12 points and Sara Crane had 11, but Pinole Valley was just too much for the Chargers. Javier Brantley scored 24 points to complement Stallworth. a 6-foot-3 post player who stands out all around, even hitting a three-pointer in the game.

DP (2-1) plays Lompoc Saturday at 3:30.
