Brittny Hummel and Flo Chardon combined for a perfect 10 for the San Marcos girls water polo team on Friday, and plenty of other Royals scorers chipped in to complete a 19-4 shellacking of visiting St. Joseph.
San Marcos improves to 5-4 on the season with one more warmup (Jan. 3 against Temple City) before Channel League play begins in January.
Hummel and Chardon scored 5 each and Jade Fitzgerald had four goals. Zoe Kirker, Kristen Biefuss, Rose Koper and Wakamotsu all had one apiece.
The Royals tallied 15 steals as a team with Hummel, Chardon and Kirker leading the way with three each. Kirker had a strong all-around game, sharing the team lead in assists with Fitzgerald.
Despite the eventual lopsided final score, the Royals had another slow start, a trend head coach Brian Roth has been trying to buck.
“To be competitive against Santa Barbara, you have to play all four quarters,” Roth said of his team’s goals before San Marcos opens up league play on Jan. 6.
