DP gets a Saturday split at Righetti Tournament

Meghan Murphy and Jessica Escalante combined for 43 points as the Dos Pueblos girls basketball team took down Pioneer Valley 67-51 Saturday in the Righetti Tournament, but the Chargers ran out of gas in the day’s second game, losing the season’s rubber match against the host Warriors 56-49.

DP (9-7) jumped out to a 17-point halftime lead against the Panthers and played even in the second half.“We jumped on them early with pressure and that basically sparked our offense with some transition baskets,” said coach Maynard Pilapil.

But the foul line wasn’t kind to the Chargers in the second game, as they went 4-for-13 on freebies against Righetti, which was playing its first game of the day. All nine of those misses came on the front end of one-and-one opportunities.

“We were very poor at converting our opportunities, and you have to give Righetti credit because they have good players at every position,” said Pilapil.

DP finishes up the tournament as well as the preseason at 5 p.m. Monday against Lompoc.
