Curiel scores 12, but Royals fall to Oregonians

Vanessa Curiel had a career-high 12 points, but the limping San Marcos girls basketball team fell behind early as Beaverton (Ore.) nailed five treys in the first quarter to pick up a 60-45 victory in the opening round of Green-Division play at the Tournament of Champions.

The Royals (5-6) are without leading scorer Jeannette Mendoza and third-leading scorer Marissa Unzueta due to injuries, and coach Kristyn Miller was about as happy with a loss as a coach can be.San Marcos won the second quarter 18-9.

“We showed phenomenal physicality tonight, and I think that the second quarter was the best quarter we’ve had to date,” she said, citing the strong defense or Curiel and Lindsey Hyslop.

San Marcos also won the fourth quarter 13-11.
