Cardinals stopped twice at Winter Slam

The Bishop Diego girls basketball team took its lumps at the Winter Slam on Friday, getting edged 44-40 by Village Christian before running into a tough Sierra Canyon, falling 65-38.

Against Village Christian, the Cardinals jumped out to a halftime lead but head coach Jeff Burich blamed turnovers (27 of them) for letting Village back into the game in the second half.

Bishop was outscored 29-18 after halftime in its first game in two weeks.

“We had trouble keeping it up for 32 minutes,” said Burich.

Janelle Kohler led Bishop Diego (5-4) with 15 points in the first game while Jennifer Jimenez reached double digits in both games: 12 against Village Christian and 16 against Sierra Canyon.

“Sierra Canyon is a very good team,” noted Burich about the new school from the L.A. area.

The Cardinals’ next game in the tournament is slated for Monday at noon.
