Besant Hill tops Cate, 51-31

The Cate boys varsity basketball team had a disappointing league opener against Besant Hill (5-1), as the Rams (1-3) were held scoireless in the first quarter and went on to lose 51-31.

Cate ended the first half down by a score of 11 to 24.  Mark Mullan (4 points), Houston Bradley (3), and Vladimir Vilsaint (2) supplied the majority of our offensive production in the first half.

Besant Hill’s offense came into the contest averaging about 70 points per game, and Cate boys did a good job of playing good physical team defense and taking six charges, according to coach Bryan Rodriguez.

“Our inability to finish around the basket and take care of the ball was the biggest obstacle preventing the team from earning its first league win.  We compiled over 30 turnovers in the game and many of those turnovers lead to easy baskets for our opponents,” wrote Rodriguez un an email.

Cate showed stretches of confidence and aggressiveness offensively in the second half by moving the ball around and making the defense work.  Vilsaint and Bradley both hit two treys in the second half to re-invigorate the team both on offense and defense.
