Aijian, defense turn it up in Bishop second half

The Bishop Diego girls basketball team scored a convincing 59-42 win over Thacher at the Laguna Blanca/Bishop Diego Tournament on Thursday, riding a strong second half for the Cardinals’ third straight victory.

“We turned it up defensively on them,” said Bishop head coach Jeff Burich, pleased with how his team turned up the pressure by switching from zone to man-to-man defense. “I have to compliment the girls on adaptibility.”

Courtney Houston was especially tenacious, recording six steals that Burich credited with leading to lots of easy buckets.

Heather Aijian also turned it up in the second half but on the offensive end. On her 18th birthday, the senior scored all of her 16 points in the last two quarters.

Bishop turned a 2-point halftime lead into 17-point rout by outscoring the Toads 33-18 in the half.

Janelle Kohler led the Cardinals with 18 points and added 11 rebounds, and Jennifer Jimenez scored 11 more.

With the victory, Bishop Diego (3-2) moves on to play Villanova on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the Brickhouse.
