Westmont loses buildings, postpones events

About 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, November 13, a wildfire broke out just above the Westmont Campus amidst strong sundowner winds that reached 70 miles per hour. The campus lost several structures, some of which were emptied just last week and were scheduled for demolition to make way for new facilities.

Among the buildings which were lost were the physics and psychology buildings and portions of Clark residence hall.  About 50 students have been affected.  All students, faculty and staff are safe after being sheltered-in-place on Thursday night.  As of Friday afternoon, all students had been evacuated from campus.

Most tragic was the loss of homes by 14 faculty members and their families who lived in Westmont’s faculty housing. That number includes the homes of three coaches.

Also lost were the baseball dugouts and grandstands, which were scheduled to begin renovation soon.

Volleyball games scheduled for Friday and Saturday have been cancelled. No decision has been made about rescheduling the games.

The GSAC Men’s Soccer Tournament championship game, scheduled for Saturday at Azusa Pacific has been postponed and will be played either Sunday or Monday.
