Spiker sweep has Vaqueros hoping for playoffs

SAN LUIS OBISPO — SBCC got 13 kills apiece from outside hitters Jessica Tune and Sam Potter and great ball-control from Vanessa Shaw in a 28-26, 25-18, 25-15 sweep at Cuesta.

It was the final regular-season match for the Vaqueros (10-10, 8-2), who took second in the Western State Conference and finished 9-2 following a 1-8 start.

“We might end up like our football team, on the outside looking in,” said SBCC coach Ed Gover, referring to the playoffs. “We might be like the BCS team that gets left out.”

Shaw, a sophomore from DP, had 22 digs and Gover praised the setting of Amelia Shugrue. When the teams met on Oct. 28, the Vaqueros beat Cuesta in five games.

“We played a great second half of the season but it might not be enough,” Gover added.
