S.B. Pool League: Week 9

INDIVIDUAL MATCH SUMMARIES
Cliff Room 3 [9] at Old King’s Road 2 [6]
Cliff Room 3 picked up their second victory of the season as they waded into Old King’s Road 2 and won 9-6. When we say “waded” we mean literally. As the night wore on the pool room at OKR started to flood. Two-game winners Bryan Lum and Ian Cox helped OKR jump out to a 3-1 lead but Cliff Room responded with five straight wins and they never looked back. Cliff Room’s Tony Lenzi led all scorers with three wins. 11th place Cliff Room 3 improved their record to 2-7. 8th place Old King’s Road 2 dropped to 3-6.

Creekside 1 [9] at Tiburon Tavern [6]
Creekside 1 was a man short but it didn’t matter as they blasted Tiburon Tavern by a score of 9-6. Three-game winners Mark Weingartner and Brian Guajardo led the way for 6th place Creekside 1 (5-4). Alex Balanda‘s two wins helped Tiburon maintain a lead through the first nine games, but it was all Creekside after that. Last place Tiburon fell to 0-9.

Don Q’s 1 [8] at Monty’s 2 [7]
For the first time in many years, two teams tied for 1st place after week 8 squared off as Don Q’s 1 traveled to Monty’s 2. And what a magnificent battle it was. Two-game winners Andres CortesVicente Mosqueda, and Edmundo Burques helped Monty’s jump out to an early 5-1 lead. Captain Jim Holloway won the second of his three game wins to stop the Don Q’s bleeding, and seven games later Don Q’s had come all the back to take a 7-6 lead. In game 14, Larry Smith was trying to squeeze the cue ball past Mosqueda’s ball, but he fouled. Smith disagreed with the call, but both refs agreed it was a foul, and the call stood. Larry was clearly agitated by the call, which helped Mosqueda escape with a win to even the score at 7-7. That set up the finale between Burques and Brent Boone. These two top players are among the most deliberate players in the league, so it wasn’t surprising that the last game lasted 30 minutes. After several rounds of safeties, Boone was finally able to execute a nifty two-ball run out to give Don Q’s the victory. Don Q’s 1 now stands alone atop A Division at 8-1. Monty’s 2 (7-2) fell back to 2nd place.

Monty’s 1 [6] at Cliff Room 1 [9]
Eddie Velez continued his hot play as his three wins and a table run powered Cliff Room 1 to a 9-6 victory over visiting Monty’s 1. Velez’s win streak now stands at 15 games; tops in A Division and second only to Cliff Room 4’s Peter Tagles (17 games).Joe Mesa and Ernesto Sanchez each had two wins for Monty’s, who never led in the match but trailed by only one game after game 11. Pat Wieser clinched the match with his win over Sanchez in game 13, and David Clark finished out the contest by winning his third game of the night. 7th place Cliff Room 1 improved to 4-5 while 10th place Monty’s 1 fell to 2-7.

Moose Lodge [11] at Bak Dor 2 [4]
Bak Dor 2’s early 2-0 lead quickly disintegrated and the Moose Lodge stampeded their way to an 11-4 victory. Three-game winners Jorge Guerrero and Don McCrary were top Moose. Rundi Culp led Bak Dor with two wins. With Sportsman 1’s loss at Break Tie 5, the Moose Lodge (7-2) moved up to 3rd place. The Moose will host Sportsman next week. Bak Dor 2 (3-6) fell to 9th place with the loss.

Old Town Tavern [8] at Carp Billiards [7]
It was one of those nights where Old Town Tavern would not be denied. After enduring hours of traffic to get to Carp Billiards, Old Town nearly blew a 7-4 lead, but three-game winner Marty Schwind saved the day, winning the hill-hill game to give Old Town an 8-7 victory. Colin Clayton led Carp Billiards with three wins and a break-and-run. Teammate Garet Watters also had three wins. 9th place Old Town Tavern improved to 3-6 on the season. Carp Billiards (1-8) fell one spot to 11th place.

Cliff Room 2 [9] at Break Time 2 [6]
It was the Brendan and Brandon show at Break Time. Brendan Mackey and Brandon Teris both had three wins to lead Cliff Room 2 to a 9-6 victory over Break Time 2. Ed Ogden and Bob Freed led Break Time with two wins each. 6th place Cliff Room 2 improved to 5-4. 7th place Break Time 2 fell to 3-6.

Endless Summer [7] at Creekside 2 [8]
Host Creekside 2 notched their second win of the season, an 8-7 nail-biter against Endless Summer. The first of Shaun Snyder‘s two wins helped Endless Summer jump out to an early 3-1 lead, but three-game winners Keith Gruel and Andrew Wood helped Creekside battle back to tie the score at the beer frame. Two-game winner Nick Conforti opened the beer frame with a win for Endless Summer, but Creekside was able to win 3 of the last 4 games to emerge victorious. This was Andrew Wood’s first-ever 3-win night in his three seasons of league play. With the win, Creekside 2 (2-7) climbed out of the B Division cellar and now sit in 10th place. 8th place Endless Summer fell to 3-6.

Monty’s 3 [8] at Don Q’s 2 [7]
Monty’s 3 blew a 5-2 lead at Don Q’s 2, but Phil Beach rescued Monty’s with a spectacular 8-ball bank shot in the hill-hill match to give Monty’s the 8-7 victory. Captain Ismael Huerta led Don Q’s with three wins, while Monty’s top shooter was three-game winner Kevin Farrell. Monty’s held leads of 5-2 and 7-4, but they lost three straight games in the final frame to force the hill-hill matchup between Beach and Antonio Martines. Beach got down to the 8-ball, but it was surrounded by his opponent’s balls near the side pocket. Beach called the cross-bank shot, and it miraculously went in. 2nd place Monty’s 3 improved to 8-1. Don Q’s 2 (6-3) fell to 5th place.

Old King’s Road 1 [5] at Cliff Room 4 [10]
Peter Tagles extended his league-leading win streak to 17 games and undefeated Cliff Room 4 handed Old King’s Road 1 their second loss in a row. Cliff Room took an early 3-0 lead, and after OKR closed the gap to 3-2, Cliff Room won 5 of the next 6 games to secure the victory. Cliff Room’s Maurice Elias padded his lead in B Division with three wins and a table run. Pete Conover and Andy Reagan both had two wins for Old King’s Road. 1st place Cliff Room 4 now stands at 9-0. Old King’s Road 1 (7-2) fell another spot to 4th place.

Sportsman 1 [4] at Break Time 5 [11]
Break Time 5 won the first 8 games of the match and embarrassed visiting Sportsman 1, 11-4. Bob Pastor and Brian Purrington both had three wins for Break Time 5, and Pastor’s first win on the night was a break-and-run against then-division-leader Chris “The Ripper” Ackler. During the eight-game onslaught, Mike Rys had a break-and-run and Ed Martin had a table run. Bob McLean had a table run and two wins to lead Sportsman. After opening the season 5-0, Sportsman 1 has dropped 3 of 4 and has fallen all the way to 5th place. Break Time 5 (7-2) jumps two positions to 3rd place.

Break Time 1 [11] at Sportsman 2 [4]
Andre Aparicio and Marc Alexander both had three wins and visiting Break Time 5 easily outmanned Sportsman 2, winning 11-4. Chris Atkins had a table run in his first game and Break Time jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Captain Anthony Saenz got the first of his two game wins to close the gap to 3-2, but Break Time responded by winning the next seven games, capped off by a George Guerrero break-and-run, to seal the win. With the win, Break Time 1 (6-3) moves up to 4th place. Sportsman 2 (1-8) fell to last place.
