S.B. Pool League: Week 8

Santa Barbara Pool League – Week in Review

Winter 2008/09 Week 8 – Tues Nov 18, 2008

  A Division

  • Break Time 1 [11] at Cliff Room 3 [4]Cliff Room 3 saw their early lead disintegrate as they lost at home to Break Time 1 by a score of 11-4.   Keith Baugher, Chris Smith, and Ray Zielonko all won in the opening frame to give Cliff Room a 3-1 lead, but behind three-game winners George Guerrero and Chris Atkins, Break Time 1 won the next seven games to seal the victory.   Tony Lenzi got the other game win for 11th place Cliff Room 3 (1-7).   5th place Break Time 1 improved to 5-3.
  • Cliff Room 1 [5] at Creekside 1 [10]After three straight wins, Cliff Room 1 suffered a setback at Creekside on Tuesday, losing 10-5 to Creekside 1.   Mark Weingartner‘s three wins were the driving force for Creekside 1 (4-4), who moved up to 6th place with the win.   Eddie Velez had another sparkling night for Cliff Room.   He opened the match with a win to give Cliff Room their only lead of the night, then went on to gather three wins and a break-and-run to extend his league winning streak to 12 games.   Creekside quickly regained the lead with wins in the second and third game, and they never trailed thereafter.   With the loss, Cliff Room 1 (3-5) fell back to 7th place.
  • Monty’s 2 [10] at Monty’s 1 [5]Monty’s 2 gained a share of the A Division lead after they came from behind to beat hometown rival Monty’s 1 by a final of 10-5.   Monty’s 1 took an early 2-0 lead, but Vicente Mosqueda rolled in one of his two table runs on the night to spark Monty’s 2 to a five-game win streak and a 5-2 lead.   Two-game winner Ernesto Sanchez made the score 5-3, but Monty’s 2 responded by winning the next four game to secure the match.   Jim Steele capped off the Monty’s 2 onslaught with his second break-and-run of the season.   Monty’s 2 (7-1) is now tied for 1st place with Don Q’s 1.   Appropriately, these two teams square off next week at Monty’s.   Monty’s 1 (2-6) fell one spot to 10th place.
  • Old King’s Road 2 [6] at Don Q’s 1 [9]Old King’s Road 2 gave 1st place Don Q’s 1 all they could handle, but in the end Don Q’s was too tough as they survived, 9-6.   The big two for Don Q’s, Jim Holloway and Robert Rosa, provided three pairs of wins, each halting Don Q’s losing streaks.   Old King’s Road, led by two-game winners Bryan Lum and Donald Perkins, fell behind early 4-1 but won five of the next seven games to make the score 7-6.   Holloway ended the OKR threat with a win in game 13.   Lum’s second game was a break-and-run, doubling his season table run total.   Don Q’s 1 (7-1) is now tied for 1st place with next week’s opponent, Monty’s 2.   8th place Old King;s Road 2 fell to 3-5.
  • Tiburon Tavern [3] at Sportsman 1 [12]Division leaders Leana Finley and Chris Ackler both had three wins for host Sportsman 1 in their manhandling of Tiburon Tavern.   After Ben Woolf put Tiburon on the board with an opening-game win, Sportsman won 9 of the next 10 game to put the match on ice.   Chuke Prajapati also had three wins for Sportsman 1 (6-2), who regained 3rd place with the victory.   Last place Tiburon Tavern (0-8) remains the league’s only winless team.

  B Division

  • Break Time 2 [1] at Monty’s 3 [14]Monty’s 3 went on a scoring frenzy at home against Break Time 2, winning 14-1.   Kerry Randolph, Kevin Farrell, Phil Beach and Debbie Beach all had three wins to vault Monty’s 3 (7-1) from 4th to 2nd place in B Division.   Bob Freed had the only game win for 7th place Break Time 2 (3-5).
  • Cliff Room 4 [9] at Break Time 5 [6]In a clash of two of the top B Division teams, host Break Time 5 fell behind 5-1 to division leading Cliff Room 4 and couldn’t quite recover, losing 9-6.   Division leader Maurice Elias opened the match with his fifth table run of the season, but the big story for Cliff Room 4 was the play of Peter Tagles.   Tagles climbed into 3rd place in B Division with three wins and a break-and-run, extending his league-leading win streak to 14 games.   Two-game winners Mike Rys and Dave Thomas brought Break Time to within two games at the beer frame break, but Cliff Room won the next two games to secure the victory.   1st place Cliff Room 4 (8-0) now stands alone as the league’s only undefeated team.   With the loss, Break Time 5 (6-2) fell two spots to 5th place.
  • Creekside 2 [2] at Cliff Room 2 [13]Host Cliff Room 2 won the first six games of the match and cruised to an easy 13-2 victory over Creekside 2.   Kyle Hubert, Brendan Mackey, and Nick Doer all had three wins for 6th place Cliff Room 2 (4-4), and teammate Brandon Teris scored his league-leading sixth table run.   Justin Brown and Keith Gruel scored the lone game wins for last-place Creekside 2 (1-7).
  • Don Q’s 2 [11] at Old King’s Road 1 [4]There were fireworks at Old King’s Road as two top teams, Old King’s Road 1 and Don Q’s 2, clashed heads.   Don Q’s 2, led by three-game winners Jim Zambelli and Ismael Huerta, jumped out to a 4-0 lead and had the match won by the ninth game of the night.   Zambelli’s first win was a table run.   The fireworks came in game 13 as OKR’s Pete Conover took on Don Q’s Ken Hilton.   Conover had summoned referees to watch a Hilton shot, and both refs agreed that the shot was a foul.   Hilton was not in agreement and started to argue, and OKR’s Andy Reagan took it upon himself to settle the argument.   Push came to shove, and the players had to be physically separated.   Luckily for them, no serious punches were thrown, or else each player could have been thrown out of the league.   With the win, Don Q’s 2 (6-2) moved up to 4th place.   This was the first loss of the season for Old King’s Road 1 (7-1), who fell back to 3rd place.
  • Sportsman 2 [6] at Endless Summer [9]Endless Summer built an early 3-0 lead against Sportsman 2, then hung on for a close 9-6 victory.   Skyler Stamegna led Endless Sumer with three wins, including a win in game 13 that gave Endless Summer the match.   Derrick Craig and Anthony Saenz both had two wins for Sportsman 2, but it wasn’t enough.   8th place Endless Summer improved to 3-5 while 11th place Sportsman 2 fell to 1-7.

  Inter-Division

  • Moose Lodge [8] at Old Town Tavern [7]The Moose Lodge survivied a wild, seesaw match at Old Town Tavern, winning 8-7.   This match went back and forth all night long.   Behind two-game winners Marty Schwind and Billy Bebe, Old Town jumped out to a 3-0 lead.   Three-game winner Juan Manzo then started a three-game run for the Moose that tied the score at 3-3.   The match continued like this until the score was 7-7.   Moose Lodge sub Don McCrary was successful in his first league hill-hill match, beating Old Town’s Michael Craig.   Despite the win, the Moose Lodge (6-2) fell one spot to 4th place in A Division.   9th place Old Town tavern fell to 2-6.
  • Bak Dor 2 [10] at Carp Billiards [5]Rikki Byers scored her first-ever league table run as her Bak Dor 2 squad easily handled Carp Billiards by a score of 10-5.   Mario Reyes (Bak Dor) and Colin Clayton (Carp Billiards) both had three wins, but the smile on their faces was no where near as wide as the one on Rikki’s.   Byers’ table run was one of Bak Dor’s four game wins to open the match.   Carp Billiards could never recover from the deficit.   With the win, Bak Dor (3-5) moved up two spots to 8th place.   10th place Carp Billiards fell to 1-7.
