Winter 2008/09 Week 7 – Tues Nov 11, 2008

  A Division

  • Cliff Room 3 [9] at Bak Dor 2 [6]

Tony Lenzi had three wins, including the match-clinching game, to lead Cliff Room 3 to a 9-6 victory at Bak Dor 2.   This was the first win of the season for 11th place Cliff Room 3 (1-6).   Cliff Room won 7 of the first 8 matches, and despite two wins each by Terri Bentzinger and Mario Reyes, Bak Dor could not recover.   10th place Bak Dor 2 fell to 2-5.

  • Creekside 1 [2] at Monty’s 2 [13]

2nd place Monty’s 2 (6-1) moved within one game of 1st place Don Q’s 1 with a 13-2 schooling of Creekside 1.   Andres Cortes, Alfonso Lazaro, Mundo Burques, and Vicente Mosqueda all had three wins for Monty’s.   It was a bittersweet night for their teammate, Jim Steele.   Steele had the night’s only table run, but he also had both Monty’s losses (to Mark Weingartner and Ricardo Topete).   With the loss, Creekside 1 (3-4) fell to 7th place.

  • Don Q’s 1 [8] at Break Time 1 [7]

1st place Don Q’s 1 (6-1) almost let a 6-2 lead slip away, but they hung on to squeeze out an 8-7 victory at Break Time 1.   Two-game winner Ray Arias helped Break Time take an early 2-1 lead, but with the help of back-to-back table runs by Brent Boone and Jeff Azevedo, Don Q’s won the next five games to take a 6-2 advantage.   Paul Williams and George Guerrero both won their last two games to fuel the Break Time comeback, but it fell one game short.   The narrow victory allowed 2nd place Monty’s 2 to creep up on Don Q’s 1.   Jim Holloway‘s crew now holds a slim one-game advantage over the Mexican Mafia.   Break Time 1 (4-3) slipped one spot to 5th place.

  • Monty’s 1 [7] at Old King’s Road 2 [8]

It was a rollercoaster ride at Old King’s Road Tuesday.   Ernesto Sanchez and his Monty’s 1 squad came to pay a visit.   Both of these evenly matched teams entered the contest with 2-4 records, and the match reflected that evenness.   The two teams traded wins throughout the first six games, then Old King’s Road went on a scoring spree by winning five straight games.   At the beer frame, OKR held a commanding 7-3 lead.   To their credit, Monty’s never gave up.   Two-game winners Jesse Oliver and John Bushnell helped Monty’s win four straight games to tie the score at 7-7 and set up the hill-hill game between OKR’s Everett Plante and Monty’s Joe Mesa.   Plante defeated Mesa, sending Monty’s home dejected.   Plante, Geoff Sylvester, and Eric Kaiser all had two wins for Old King’s Road 2 (3-4), who move up to 8th place with the win.   Monty’s 1 (2-5) fell to 9th place.

  • Sportsman 1 [7] at Cliff Room 1 [8]

Eddie Velez had three huge wins and Cliff Room 1 was able to overcome a 4-0 deficit to nip Sportsman 1 at the wire, 8-7.   Things were all roses for Sportsman at the start of the match.   Two-game winners Rick Hemmings and Chris Ackler got the ball rolling with wins in the opening two games, and after Ackler won his second game, Sportsman held a 5-1 lead.   But how quickly a match can change.   Captain Gene Manriquez‘s two wins bookended a six-game Cliff Room streak that put them back on top 7-5.   Cliff Room’s Pat Wieser, who had just table ran division leader Leana Finley, then lost to Chuke Prajapati.   Hemmings followed by beating David Clark in a classic battle that saw Clark corner-hook himself with only the 8-ball remaining.   That set up the hill-hill match between Ackler and Velez.   Velez had a good chance to break-and-run, but he got a little out of shape with three balls remaining and missed his shot.   Ackler sank four balls and decided on an offensive shot to get position on his most difficult ball.   He got the position, but missed the shot, and Velez calmly ran out the table to clinch the match.   This was the third straight win for Cliff Room 1 (3-4), who move up to 6th place.   After climbing to the top of A Division, Sportsman 1 (5-2) has lost two straight matches and plummeted back to 4th place.

      B Division

    • Old Town Tavern [1] at Cliff Room 4 [14]

Fahim Azizi and Maurice Elias both had three wins and a break-and-run to lead 1st place Cliff Room 4 (7-0) to an easy 14-1 victory over visiting Old Town Tavern.   Peter Tagles and Terry Howell also had three wins for Cliff Room, who extend their B Division lead to nine games over 2nd place Old King’s Road 2.   Michael Craig got the lone win for 9th place Old Town Tavern (2-5).

    • Break Time 5 [8] at Don Q’s 2 [7]

Break Time 5 overcame a 3-0 deficit to win by a nose at Don Q’s 2.   Two-game winners Jim Zambelli, Peter Garcia, and Ismael Huerta gave Don Q’s an early 3-0 lead, but Break Time quickly tied the score with three straight wins.   The two teams then went back-and-forth for the next eight games until they were both on the hill.   The hill-hill game pitted Don Q’s Antonio Martines against Break Time’s Mike Rys.   Rys got the better of Martines, giving 3rd place Break Time 5 (6-1) the victory.   Dave Thomas led Break Time with three wins.   With the loss, Don Q’s 2 (5-2) fell two spots to 5th place.

    • Cliff Room 2 [7] at Sportsman 2 [8]

With an heroic performance by Jessica Warson, host Sportsman 2 scored their first match win of the season, an 8-7 thriller against Cliff Room 2.   Sportsman fell behind early by a 3-1 score, but Warson was able to down the Irish Assassin, Brendan Mackey, to cap a three-game Sportsman run that put them in the lead, 4-3.   The match then turned into a see-saw affair, as the next seven games resulted in lead changes.   Warson’s third win on the night came against division leader Brandon Teris, knocking Teris out of the top spot in the division.   The match came down to the 15th game, with Sportsman’s Kate Williams breaking against Cliff Room’s Kyle Hubert.   Williams prevailed, and Sportsman rejoiced.   11th place Sportsman 2 improved to 1-6, and despite the loss, Cliff Room 2 (3-4) moved up one spot to 6th place.

    • Monty’s 3 [12] at Creekside 2 [3]

Monty’s 3 (6-1) moved up to 4th place in B Division with a convincing 12-3 victory at Creekside 2.   After dropping the opening game, Monty’s rattled off nine straight wins to seccure the match.   Kerry Randolph and Todd Knudsen led Monty’s with three wins each.   Justin Brown led last place Creekside 2 (1-6) with two wins.

    • Old King’s Road 1 [10] at Break Time 2 [5]

Despite an all-star performance by Break Time’s Ed Ogden, 2nd place Old King’s Road 2 (7-0) was able to outlast Break Time 2, winning 10-5.   Ogden, who has been hampered by the after-effects of pneumonia, had a table run and three wins on the night.   Old King’s Road countered with their own three-game winners, Andy Reagan and Sam Auchincloss, and were never really threatened in the match.   Break Time 2 (3-4) fell to 7th place with the loss.

        Inter-Division

      • Endless Summer [3] at Moose Lodge [12]

With their 12-3 inter-division win at home against Endless Summer, the Moose Lodge (5-2) took two huge steps forward into 3rd place in A Division.   Moose Lodge’s Juan Manzo was unstoppable as he won all three games, including a break-and-run.   Teammates Jesus Martinez and Jorge Guerrero also had three wins for Moose Lodge.   Endless Summer kept the score tied through four games, but they lost six straight after that.   Skyler Stamegna, Adam Priddy, and Shaun Snyder each got one win for 8th place Endless Summer (2-5).

      • Carp Billiards [12] at Tiburon Tavern [3]

In an inter-division battle between last-placed teams, Carp Billiards joined Sportsman 2 and Cliff Room 3 in the ranks of the previously-winless as they destroyed host Tiburon Tavern by a score of 12-3.   Joe Chaney, Colin Clayton, and Garet Watters all had three wins for Carp Billiards (1-6), who moved out of the B Division cellar and into 10th place.   Eddie Beltran, Josette DeSoto, and Ben Woolf got the lone game wins for last place Tiburon Tavern (0-7).
