San Marcos nearly takes out No. 6 Mayfield

The San Marcos Royals took Mayfield, the No. 6-seeded team in CIF Division II, to the brink on Thursday, falling on a total-game count 67-65 after the schools matched each other 9-9 in regular-match play in the opening round of the CIF Division II playoffs.

The Royals’ doubles team of Shelby Zylstra and Amy Kinsella was undefeated and Amy Ransohoff-Christine Pearson and Caitlin Mannix-Annie Battles both won two sets each.

“It showed the girls that we might very well be the third ranked team in the Channel League but that doesn’t mean that we wouldn’t be the #1 team in a whole lot of other sections – or at least close to it,” said head coach Kara Warkentin, whose Royals finish the season at 11-6.

Senior Julian Mannix won a set and almost beat Mayfield’s Laura Wade, who was unbeaten on the day.
