Royals recover with victory over Rams

The San Marcos girls tennis team could have had a let-down a day after an energy-sapping rivalry match with Santa Barbara. Instead, every Royal had a winning day in a 14-4 non-league win over Cate, one of the top teams in Division V.

San Marcos’ top two doubles teams dominated play. Amy Ransohoff-Christine Pearson and Shelby Zylstra-Amy Kinsella both coasted to three wins.

Cate’s No. 1 singles player Arielle Kubetschek, who is undefeated in the Condor League and won three sets against the Royals in an earlier 13-5 San Marcos win, went 3-0 again for the bulk of the Rams’ success.

If not for Kubetschek, San Marcos’ Julian Mannix, Caitlin Mannix and Kiki Katsev would have been perfect, winning all of the other six sets they played.

“I actually felt better about how the girls played this time,” said Rams coach Barbara DeGroot. “We just didn’t close out a couple of sets.”

The Royals, who have already wrapped up a CIF berth, improve to 10-5 overall and they are 3-4 in the Channel League. The Royals play Ventura on Tuesday in their final regular season match.

Cate is now 5-5 and 3-0 in league with three league matches remaining.
