Golic goes off on No. 9 Anteaters

IRVINE — Sophomore Milos Golic scored seven goals to lead No. 9 UC Santa Barbara past eighth-ranked UC Irvine, 14-12, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Anteater Pool Sunday.

Daniel Natalizio added three goals as the Gauchos improved to 8-4 overall and 1-1 in the MPSF.

Brandon Johnson led UCI (2-6, 0-2) with a career-high six goals while Greg Enloe added three.

Johnson gave the Anteaters an early 2-0 lead on goals at the 7:29 and 6:47 marks of the first period.

UCSB’s Dane Lindstrom scored at 6:16 to cut the margin to 2-1 and Golic converted back-to-back goals at 4:11 and 3:19 to give the Gauchos a 3-2 lead.

Johnson’s power-play goal with 3:03 left in the opening quarter tied the game before Travis Watts (2:41) and Natalizio (2:06) scored to put UCSB up 5-3.

Johnson closed out the high-scoring opening period with another power-play goal just before the buzzer.

Enloe opened the scoring in the second quarter with an extra-man goal at the 7:31 mark to draw UCI even at 5-5. The Gauchos took the lead for good at 6-5 as Golic scored a power-play goal with 6:24 left in the first half and UCSB went on to take a 9-6 halftime lead.

The Gauchos’ largest lead was 13-9 on an extra-man goal by Jesse Tootell with 1:47 remaining in the third quarter.

Michael Robinson had 14 saves in goal for UCSB. Matt Johnson of UCI recorded four stops in the first quarter before giving way to Erik Evered, who made five saves over the final three quarters.
