Dons dust off Simi Valley at Birnam

The Santa Barbara girls golf team stayed true to its character at Birnam Wood on Thursday, as Haley True and Olivia Fanaro led the well-rounded squad to a 264-296 victory over Simi Valley.

All season long, the Dons — off to their best start in school history at 10-2 — have enjoyed a level of consistency where all the girls turn in score cards within a few strokes of each other.

The same can not be said for Simi Valley. After medalist Brandi Hull’s 47, Simi’s next best was 10 shots higher and the fifth score was a 65.

Santa Barbara’s other scores included Lexi Ortega’s 53, Thia Laurain’s 54 and Alex Schlagel’s 59.

“The good thing about the team this year is that most of the girls are within five strokes of each other. We’re really deep,” said Ryan Throop.

The Dons played at the private course in Montecito for the first and only time this season.

“There’s a lot of ravines and dry creeks in front of the greens and they’re small greens,” described Throop, saying there was little margin for error on the par-36 course.

Santa Barbara starts the second round of Channel League play on Tuesday and Thursday of next week against the Ventura schools before facing crosstown rivals San Marcos and Dos Pueblos on the second turn the following week.
