Chargers run singles unbeaten streak to 27

An ailing Hayley Edwards got an early rest on Tuesday, letting Shelbi Nigh finish things up for the Dos Pueblos girls tennis team in a 15-3 non-league victory over Arroyo Grande.

Nigh’s set win — combined with Edwards’ two, No. 1 Erica Cano’s three and No. 2 Lauren Stratman’s three – puts the Charger singles players at 27-0 over their last three matches.

“It’s a really energetic team,” said Edwards, who is playing through shin splints. “We’re just really close. It’s really fun.”

Winning is fun and the Chargers have been doing plenty of it, improving to 15-2 on the season. Dos Pueblos has won five in a row and its only two losses have come from Mira Costa and Santa Barbara. The Chargers and Dons play again next Tuesday at Santa Barbara.

Edwards figures to be available for the big match.

“It’s actually getting better,” she said of her injury. “I put it out of my mind, or I try to.”

Amy Logan and Amy Sagraves were their usual solid selves, going 2-0 on the day. The No. 2 doubles team of Oriane Matthys and Nicoletta Bradley, who coach Liz Frech has taken to calling “the comeback kids,” also won two sets.
