Chargers impress again, Deardorff wins boys race

The Dos Pueblos cross country teams proved that their standout performance in the first Channel League meet was not a fluke on Thursday, taking second place behind Ventura in both the girls and boys races once again in the second league meet down in Ventura.

Santa Barbara High’s Briggs Deardorff also had a top-notch performance, winning the boys race 16:46.

“He had some guys on his shoulder, but he just pulled away on the last quarter-mile. He ran a great race,” said Dons coach Olivia Perdices of the sophomore.

The DP boys almost took home the win this time, finishing just five points behind mighty Ventura. Sergei Sushchikh (17:27), Chris Braden (17:31) and Raymond Trujillo (17:32) finished 5th, 6th and 7th respectively. Coach Leslie Wiggins-Roth said that Trujillo had “the race of his life.”

On the girls side, Kelly Kosmo once again led the way for the Chargers with a third-place time of 20:53. Alexa Canova-Parker was the seventh Charger across the line in 19th place, but her finish was critical in staving off San MArcos in the battle for second place.

Ana Cowgill was the top Don in the girls race, finishing 20th in 22:16.
