Cardinal spikers turn a corner in loss

Even though the Bishop Diego girls volleyball team got swept by St. Bonaventure on Thursday night, coach Joe Rieken saw his young team turn a corner in a 25-12, 25-22, 26-24 loss.

“We learned a new lineup yesterday in practice and what a difference it made,” said Reiken. “In the first game we were still getting used to it but then it really clicked in the last two. We definitely scared them a little bit.”

The Cardinals, still winless in the Tri-Valley League, play as many as five freshman on the floor at the same time and have been working on finding an identity this season.

Freshman Diana Sleep and Nicole Tetherow led the way. Tetherow knocked handed out 16 assists and Sleep was effective on both sides of the net with eight kills and 16 digs. Janelle Kohler was huge up front, collecting a season-high nine blocks.

Malibu is next on the Cardinals’ plate for Tuesday.
