South Coast spikers run the table at Dave Mohs

With three Channel League girls volleyball teams representing the South Coast at the 64-team field of the Dave Mohs Orange County Championships, the Channel League can see how well it stacks up against Southern California’s best.

Quite nicely, thanks.

Dos Pueblos, San Marcos and Santa Barbara each won their two matches in pool play on Friday and each sit atop their respective 4-team pools.

The Royals probably had the most exciting day. After dropping the first set against Beckman, they rallied to take the 3-set match against the No. 1 seed in their pool 20-25, 25-14, 15-12.

Next was Great Oak High School. None of the three sets were decided by more than the neccesary two points. The Royals managed to take the first set 29-27 before dropping the second 23-25. Soon they found themselves in deep trouble, down 10-14 in the deciding set.

San Marcos held it together and fought back for the 16-14 victory.

“They didn’t hand it to us,” said coach Roger Kuntz. “We had to earn it.”

Santa Barbara cruised through West Ranch 25-14, 25-19 but struggled a bit with Mission Viejo before winning 25-23, 26-28, 15-9.

Dos Pueblos had the easiest time of the bunch, sweeping both Edison (25-7, 25-9) and Hanford (25-7, 25-9) handily. The Chargers face Dana Hills this morning at 9 a.m.

With victories in their morning matches, the schools will be gauranteed spots in the tournament’s elimination bracket starting this afternoon.
