SBCC’s Shaw named to all-tournament team

SAN DIEGO — Vanessa Shaw moved from libero to left-side hitter on Saturday and didn’t miss a beat for the SBCC women’s volleyball team. The former Dos Pueblos High standout recorded 32 kills in eight games and earned all-tournament honors for the Vaqueros, who tied for fifth in the 12-team battle.

Shaw was filling in for Sam Potter, who had an out-of-town commitment.

Playing best 2-of-3 matches, the Vaqueros swept Rio Hondo 25-11, 25-15; lost to Reedley 25-23, 18-25, 15-10 and defeated Cuyamaca 25-9, 25-12. In a one-game playoff quarterfinal, they lost to the host, San Diego City, 25-19.

Chelsey Forrey had 25 digs from her libero position.

“We played well,” said SBCC coach Ed Gover. “We’re still missing our starting center (Amelia Shugrue), who should be back next week. Our backups (Roxanne Solomita and Whitney Leight) did quite well.”
