G-Land finding early season success

Competing in only its second tournament since workouts began last month, the G-Land club baseball team took home the first place trophy from a tourney held this weekend at Girsh Fields in Goleta.G-Land squared off on its home field against other 14U teams from Oxnard, Santa Maria and Tehachapi. SBSC collects 6-pack of champions at Summer Cup

The Santa Barbara Soccer Club captured six division championships at its annual Summer Cup tournament over the weekend.In all, the club had 17 teams reach the finals out of 29 flights. In some age groups, there were enough teams entered to form two flights — Anacapa and Santa Cruz.The boys championship teams were the Under-16s in the Anacapa Flight, the U14s, and the U10 White squad. Justin Vom Steeg was among 119 players from around the country to be selected to attend the U.S. Soccer Under-14 national program’s identification camp in Concord, Mass.Justin, the eldest son Almeria and Tim Vom Steeg, the men’s soccer coach at UCSB, is trying to make the first U14 boys national team, which will compete at the Disney Showcase in Florida in November. The core of the Dos Pueblos district- and section-champion Junior All-Stars team won the state championship as 10 year olds in 2006.
