WWP: ASU hands Gauchos their first loss

UCSB suffered its first women’s water polo loss of the season, falling to No. 5 Arizona State 10-7 Saturday at the Women’s Invite at Campus Pool.

The Gauchos started the day beating Sonoma State 10-5.

After the opening goal from Samantha Murphy, Arizona State took the 2-1 lead, with one of the goals being a five-meter shot. The Gauchos got their own five-meter opportunity, and tied the match 2-2. The game remained close as the Sun Devils carried a 7-5 lead into halftime.

UCSB cut the deficit into one goal thanks to senior Shelby Haroldson. Arizona State took the momentum away as it scored a late goal with three seconds remaining in the third period.

The Gauchos could not get any closer to cutting the Sun Devil’s lead as they were held without a goal in the final period.

Freshmen Jessie Porter, Murphy and Bryn Hudson led the offense today with three goals apiece. Ruth Milne led the defense with a total of 11 saves, with nine coming from the game against Arizona State.

No. 15 UCSB is back in action at 8 a.m. Sunday against second-ranked UCLA.
