Warriors run over by Santa Clara

Carpinteria was done in by two big Santa Clara runs and dropped a 53-39 decision in a Frontier League girls basketball game Thursday night

The Warriors trailed 18-14 with three minutes left in the first half when Santa Clara went on an 11-0 surge. The Saints went on a 10-1 run came after Carpinteria closed to within 43-38 with five minutes remaining in the game.

“We had two lapses,” said Carpinteria coach Dan Mercer. “Give credit to Santa Clara. They are a very athletic team. We made it a competitive game. We feel we have a shot at them if we can keep them from making those big runs.”

Amanda Burch paced the Warriors (10-6, 1-1) with 18 points, while Caitlin Wallace added 12.

“It was a gallant effort,” Mercer said. “The girls played with a lot of character. (Santa Clara) is one of the top teams we’ve played.
